Now you see me, now you don’t – Trucking with CJ and rally car champion talk truck blind spots

Trucking with CJ’s Casuarina Smith and Australian rally car driver Molly Taylor recently switched seats, to produce an educational video highlighting where a truck’s blind spots are – and they had a bit of fun along the way too.

Though both are professional drivers, their roles are worlds apart.

Molly, who in 2016 became the youngest and the first female driver to win the Australian Rally Champion series, handed CJ the keys to her Subaru WRX. And CJ gave Molly the keys to the Kenworth B-double.

With Molly sitting in the driver’s seat of the Kenworth, CJ manoeuvres the WRX around the truck. Viewers are given a bird’s eye view, as the pair converse about where the car can be seen – and where it can’t.

As CJ explains in the video, “People will come up in our blind spot and duck in front and there’s just no way of seeing them.”

As she pulls the WRX in front of the truck, CJ continues, “The crazy thing with this is that even though you don’t have a bonnet, you still can’t see me.

“I think a lot of people are unaware of just how easy it is to hide a car. If people are more aware, hopefully we can eliminate more accidents.”

CJ and Molly met through their shared roles as HELLA Australia ambassadors and CJ revealed they had been wanting to do something together for some time.

Recently after completing a fill-in role driving the Team 18 Supercars Transporter across the country, CJ finished up in Melbourne, where Molly is based – which was a perfect opportunity for them to get together and make it happen.

“Molly and I had wanted to produce a video for some time, giving an insight into each other’s worlds,” said CJ.

Switching seats, they set each other a challenge – CJ had to do 180 around a cone, and Molly had to reverse the B-double.

“I wanted to bring the safety aspect into the video as well,” said CJ. “All truck drivers know about the issues we face but Molly has a different demographic of followers, so we’re able to get the message about blind spots out to a different audience.

“I think it’s really important to try and make other road users aware of these issues and bridge the gap. I’m stoked that Molly was happy to be involved in it.

“I’ve made videos about blind spots before but I thought putting someone else in the driver’s seat would be a great way to demonstrate very visually about the issue with blind spots.”

CJ also added, “Being an adrenaline junkie, it was great to have a go in the rally car too!”
