What happens when you take two professional drivers from different worlds and get them to swap seats? You get a high-adrenaline, high-respect exchange between Australian rally champion Molly Taylor and road train driver CJ, brought together through their shared role as HELLA Australia ambassadors.
Molly, Australia’s first female rally champion, admits she’s “used to being in the seat that’s sideways through the gravel.” CJ, meanwhile, is more comfortable piloting a road train across Australia. So naturally, we threw CJ into the hot seat of Molly’s Subaru WRX rally car.
“Drivers like me, we’re all about control, stability, safety” CJ said. “Suddenly, I’m being told to rip the handbrake and slide into corners. It’s the opposite of everything you’re trained to do in a truck.”
Under Molly’s calm guidance, CJ learned the art of precision rally moves. “That was mental,” CJ laughs in the video, breath still catching. “Completely outside my comfort zone, but what an experience.”
Molly also got her hands on CJ’s Kenworth, set up as a B-Double to try her hand at handling the big rig.
“It was an insight into the complexity and focus you need behind the wheel of a truck. So different, but the stakes are just as high.”
Both drivers are passionate about their fields, but it’s their respect for each other’s craft that drives this video.
“It’s a good reminder,” Molly shares, “how many skill sets there are in this industry, and how much trust you place in the person next to you on the road.”
For CJ, the project highlights why visibility matters. “When I came into trucking, I know how intimidating it can be,” she says. “It’s powerful to show that you can do this, and do it well.”
This is more than a stunt or a day of fun behind the wheel. It’s a shared moment that celebrates diversity of experience and the deep respect between two pros doing very different jobs with the same dedication to safety, skill and pride.
